Instead of an apocalypse, the cracking up of the Earth is the opening of a cosmic egg. Mark is skeptical until she shows him proof deep in a cave under the mountain. As the 'great being' breaks its way out of the mountain, powerful forces try to destroy what they see as a dangerous monster. Finally believing Kusoom's story, and incidentally falling in lover with her, he leads her followers to fight back the attacking army. Many of her followers fall in the battle, and Mark and the Cosmic Swan are wounded. Kusoom and her followers surge onto the swan's back, hoping to fly into the heavens, but the wounded swan's wing fails and they fall.
