Description

The act of writing history is more than simply compiling sources and information together in a cohesive pile; it is a matter of reviewing each and every source thoroughly in an attempt at its truthfulness. As a result of this, the concept of a singular historical truth is useless, and there should instead be a focus on valuing various tellings of history on their credibility and acceptance of this fact. The focus of this work is the theoretical ideas behind this concept and the application of these to the history of the Hardcore Punk movement that emerged in the early 1980s. This subculture which evolved from the original English and American punk of the 1970s was a very volatile part of the anti-authoritarian counter-culture bloom that was present in the United States during the 1980s. The major part of this work will be focused on retelling the rise and fall of the subculture, while trying to arrive at a version of this story that is as truthful as possible. This will be done by compiling and analysing a number of relevant sources, creating a new version of the history of Hardcore Punk in the United States of America.
