Description

It is 1810 and Major Paul van Daan and the 110th infantry prepare to meet the invading French army on Portugal's Bussaco ridge. After the recent turmoil in his personal life, Paul is hoping for a period of calm, but Lord Wellington has other plans for his most unorthodox officer.

Back in Lisbon, Paul is faced with a new set of challenges as he struggles with unreliable army supplies, new recruits and a freshly-minted young officer whose views on discipline seem to represent everything Paul despises. Meanwhile, Anne is coming to terms with the unexpected turn her future has taken. She finds friendship with the arrival in the regiment of two new, very different women even though one of them arrives in the wake of Captain Vincent Longford, whose resentment at serving under Paul is stronger than ever.

Returning to the field is a relief to Paul until he finds himself serving under the worst general in the army. Wellington's new orders place him in a situation which could endanger his career, his regiment and his life. As Paul struggles with a posting which requires him to use tact and diplomacy as well as his formidable fighting skills, the regiment waits with bated breath for their commanding officer to lose his temper in a spectacular manner.

An Irregular Regiment is the second book in the popular Peninsular War Saga and follows the 110th through the campaigns of 1810-11 as Wellington's army chases Marshal Massena's French troops back to the Spanish border.

"Historical and fictional characters rub shoulders effortlessly, and real events shape the fortunes of the characters as they move through the Peninsular War." (Amazon UK review)
