About the Book

The 19th century was distinguished by social changes, with the abolition of slavery being a prime example. The Second Industrial Revolution led to greater urbanization and increased productivity, profits and prosperity. The imperialism of major European powers brought much of Asia and almost all of Africa under their colonial control. The Spanish, Napoleonic, Holy Roman and Mughal empires collapsed during the century, expanding the influence of the British Empire, the Russian Empire, the United States, the German Empire, the French colonial empire and Meiji Japan. Post 1815 the British could boast unchallenged dominance. With the French Empire defeated in the Napoleonic Wars, both the British and Russian empires expanded, becoming world leading powers. The Russian Empire expanded in central and far eastern Asia, while the British Empire expanded into the vast territories in Canada, Australia, South Africa and India. By the end of the century it had expanded into Africa too, coming to control one-fifth of the world's landmass, and one-quarter of its population. Pax Britannica followed the defeat of Napoleon, ushering in unprecedented globalization and economic integration.
