When it was first published in 1885 La Regenta was attacked by critics as an obscene irreligious monstrosity and a plagiarism of Flaubert's Madame Bovary. But in recent years this, the only full-length novel by Leopoldo Alas (1852-1901), has been acknowledged as one of the outstanding works of Spanish literature.
Its subject is a shabby provincial Spanish town and, in particular, an intelligent and sensitive woman's unsuccessful - and eventually disastrous - quest for fulfilment through marriage, adultery and religion. By dint of a remarkably complete and skilful use of realism, Alas combines a lively and satirical portrait of the society as a whole with an incisive exploration of the inner life of its principal characters. In all, the novel exhibits the same fascinating mixture of rich humour and intense moral seriousness which characterizes that other Spanish masterpiece, Don Quixote.
