Soon afterwards the discoveries of Columbus (1492) in the New World ushered in a Golden Age of the Spanish Empire. Spain was conquered by Napoleon, and the 1936-39 Spanish Civil War resulted in subsequent dictatorship of General Franco, which lasted until 1975. Portugal's power in the New World grew in parallel with Spain's, but was gradually denuded. In 1926 a military coup established a dictatorship that continued until 1974. Titles include: A Short History of Spain, A Letter Written on October 4, 1589 by Captain Cuellar of the Spanish Armada to His Majesty King Philip II, The Martyrs of the Spanish Inquisition, The viceroy of New Spain and Philip II of Spain.
