However, she is plunged right back into turmoil when the paper begins receiving letters from a pseudonymous "Ho-ma-ba" who rails against the destruction of the village's rich heritage by development, and threatens terrible consequences if residents are unable to demonstrate their worthiness by decoding riddles that require a deep understanding of local history. When the riddles go unsolved, the murders begin, recreating gruesome scenes from village folklore and legend. As fear grips the community, Star teams with local police officer Nate Janowsky to try and determine the identity of the phantom killer and stop the spree.
