Hugh Simons Gibson was an American diplomat. He was in Belgium as secretary to the American Legation, when World War I began. In 1915 he unsuccessfully attempted to prevent the execution of British Nurse Edith Cavell. He was a friend of Herbert Hoover, Foreign Service officer: U.S. Minister to Poland, 1919-24; Switzerland, 1924-27; Luxembourg, 1927-33, 1937-38; U.S. Ambassador to Belgium, 1927-33, 1937-38; Brazil, 1933-36. He was on the front cover of Time Magazine on the Nov. 26, 1923, July 18, 1927 and Feb. 8, 1932 issues.
